Kailaya Vathiyam - The Echoes of Kailasa

Video : Kailaya Vathiyam in Brickfields Kandaswamy Temple,Malaysia

The very amalgamation of instrumental echoes that energise the contemporary ether to turn any atmosphere to an experiential Kailasa - that's what 'Kailaya Vathiyam' stands for.

In laymen term, this is the music which is played in Kailasa - the abode of Lord Shiva.

It is performed with a variety of instruments considered auspicious in the vedic tradition.Examples include Kombu, cymbals, percussion instruments - Parai Thappu, drums and wind instruments.

Kombu

The recital of 'Kailaya Vathiyam' may not sound musically pleasant to the ears.In fact, they appear as a non synchronous variation of frequencies jumbled up together.

Video above : List of instruments used in Kailaya Vathiyam

In the Vedic culture, sound is identified in its crudest potential and we have used sound energy elaborately to heighten our consciousness. What may not be pleasing to the ear can be immensely powerful in other ways.Penang Thiruvillas are going on now and many of you might have noticed how a simple drum beat can induce people into trance.

You might have noticed elderly people who enjoy music which may seem pathetically dull to you. They enjoy it as they have an evolved consciousness and hence, they perceive sounds differently. The music you enjoy is proportional to your consciousness.

Video :  Saama Veda Recitation

Video above displays the recitation of Saama Veda.On a superficial level,it may sound funny or odd.But try to listen  without judgement and see how it raises your consciousness instantly. Saama Veda is actually the source for all forms of music.

Another example - Madurai Mani's vocal. It may doze you off but remember that there are many who cannot avoid getting tears upon listening to him.In the past, myriad used to gather and get hypnotized by his performance.

Similarly,'Kailaya Vathiyam' is a powerful recital that can aid you in realising the state of Shiva. However, necessary preparation must be done for you to perceive its beauty.

Be meditative, attentive and perceive the sounds without judgement. You will dive deeper and realise that there could be no music more pleasant than this.

 Try this simple method :

Listen to a recital of Kailaya Vathiyam ( Youtube has plenty of them ).Close eyes and visualise a scenery in Kailasa where Shiva seems physically present. All His attendants - the Shiva Ganas are dancing haphazardly with intense energy. It is a celebration. You can see rudrakshas, vibhooti,Trishula and all relevant insignia of Shiva.

Make your visualisation as celebrative as possible.Everyone is dancing to this 'Kailaya Vathiyam' like there's no tomorrow.Internally see yourself dancing. When you dance with Shiva, what is left for worry, sorrow or even self identity ?

Try this sincerely and I guarantee, you will never see 'Kailaya Vathiyam' the same again.

  2. Yessss ! This year at the ThiruKalyanam festival in our local Shivan temple, Kailaaya Vaathiyam was arranged and along with the grand music delighting us all through the ceremony, at the end one of the members of their crew started Nandi Dance, with two fingers kept pointing in either side of the head... And the visualisation you advised was almost true in the temple when the ThiruKalyanam also concluded!!!
