शोणाद्रिनाथाष्टकम्
ŚOṆĀDRINĀTHĀṢṬAKAM
Śoṇādri means “the Red Mountain” and is an ancient name of Arunācala. Śoṇādrinātha therefore means “the Lord of Śoṇādri,” referring to Śiva as Arunācaleśvara.
The hymn praises Śiva in several aspects: as Rudra and Maheśvara, as Ardhanārīśvara, as the cosmic Lord with the Sun, Moon and Fire as His eyes, and especially as Tripurāntaka, the destroyer of the three cities.
This is a very rare hymn which is barely known or recited today. My ācārya Somaśekhara śivācārya stressed this a lot on us and we ensured that it was chanted during almost every ritual. Somaśekhara śivācārya says that this hymn is unique and non-comparable to other compositions as it is from the śaiva āgama-s, and hence, from the Lord directly.
शिवाय रुद्राय शिवार्चिताय महानुभावाय महेश्वराय ।
सोमाय सूक्ष्माय सुरेश्वराय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥१॥
śivāya rudrāya śivārcitāya mahānubhāvāya maheśvarāya |
somāya sūkṣmāya sureśvarāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 1 ||
śivāya — to Śiva
rudrāya — to Rudra, the fierce aspect of Śiva
śivārcitāya — to the one worshipped by the pious or auspicious ones
mahānubhāvāya — to the one of great dignity and majesty
maheśvarāya — to the Great Lord
somāya — to Soma, another name of Śiva
sūkṣmāya — to the subtle one
sureśvarāya — to the Lord of the gods
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to Śiva, the fierce Rudra, who is worshipped by the pious, who is of great dignity and majesty, and who is the Great Lord. Namaḥ to Soma, the subtle one, the Lord of the gods, and to Śoṇādrinātha, the Lord of Śoṇa Hill. Namaḥ Śivāya.
दिक्पालनाथाय विभावनाय चन्द्रार्धचूडाय सनातनाय ।
संसारदुःखार्णवतारणाय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥२॥
dikpālanāthāya vibhāvanāya candrārdhacūḍāya sanātanāya |
saṃsāraduḥkhārṇavatāraṇāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 2 ||
dikpālanāthāya — to the Lord and protector of the directions
vibhāvanāya — to the illuminator
candrārdhacūḍāya — to the one who bears the crescent Moon upon his head
sanātanāya — to the eternal one
saṃsāraduḥkhārṇavatāraṇāya — to the one who helps beings cross the ocean of worldly sorrows
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to the Lord who protects all directions, the illuminator, who bears the crescent Moon upon his head, and who is eternal. Namaḥ to Śoṇādrinātha, who helps beings cross the ocean of the sorrows of saṃsāra. Namaḥ Śivāya.
जगन्निवासाय जगद्धिताय सेनानिनाथाय जयप्रदाय ।
पूर्णाय पुण्याय पुरातनाय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥३॥
jagannivāsāya jagaddhitāya senānināthāya jayapradāya |
pūrṇāya puṇyāya purātanāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 3 ||
jagannivāsāya — to the abode of the world
jagaddhitāya — to the benefactor of all
senānināthāya — to the Lord of the commander of the divine armies
jayapradāya — to the giver of victory
pūrṇāya — to the complete one
puṇyāya — to the virtuous and auspicious one
purātanāya — to the ancient one
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to the one who is the abode of the world and the benefactor of all, the Lord of the commander of the divine armies, and the giver of victory. Namaḥ to Śoṇādrinātha, who is complete, virtuous, auspicious and ancient. Namaḥ Śivāya.
वागीशवन्द्याय वरप्रदाय उमार्धदेहाय गणेश्वराय ।
चन्द्रार्कवैश्वानरलोचनाय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥४॥
vāgīśavandyāya varapradāya umārdhadehāya gaṇeśvarāya |
candrārkavaiśvānaralocanāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 4 ||
vāgīśavandyāya — to the one worshipped by the Lord of Speech, Brahmā
varapradāya — to the giver of boons
umārdhadehāya — to the one who has Umā, Pārvatī, as half of his body
gaṇeśvarāya — to the Lord of the Gaṇas
candrārkavaiśvānaralocanāya — to the one whose eyes are the Moon, Sun and Fire
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to the one who is worshipped by the Lord of Speech, Brahmā; the giver of boons; the one who has Umā, Pārvatī, as half of his body; and the Lord of the Gaṇas. Namaḥ to Śoṇādrinātha, whose three eyes are the Moon, Sun and Fire. Namaḥ Śivāya.
रथाधिरूढाय रसाधराय वेदाश्वयुक्ताय विधिस्तुताय ।
चन्द्रार्कचक्राय शशिप्रभाय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥५॥
rathādhirūḍhāya rasādharāya vedāśvayuktāya vidhistutāya |
candrārkacakrāya śaśiprabhāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 5 ||
rathādhirūḍhāya — to the one who rides upon a chariot
rasādharāya — to the one who holds or supports the essence of all
vedāśvayuktāya — to the one whose chariot is yoked with the Vedas as horses
vidhistutāya — to the one praised by Vidhi, Brahmā
candrārkacakrāya — to the one whose chariot has the Moon and Sun as its wheels
śaśiprabhāya — to the one who shines with the radiance of the Moon
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to the one who rides upon the divine chariot, who holds the essence of all, whose chariot is yoked with the Vedas as horses, and who is praised by Brahmā. Namaḥ to Śoṇādrinātha, whose chariot has the Moon and Sun as its wheels and who shines with the radiance of the Moon. Namaḥ Śivāya.
विरिञ्चिसारथ्यविराजिताय गिरीन्द्रचापाय गिरीश्वराय ।
फालाग्निनेत्राय फणीश्वराय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥६॥
viriñcisārathyavirājitāya girīndracāpāya girīśvarāya |
phālāgninetrāya phaṇīśvarāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 6 ||
viriñcisārathyavirājitāya — to the one who is glorified with Viriñci, Brahmā, as his charioteer
girīndracāpāya — to the one who wields the great mountain as his bow
girīśvarāya — to the Lord of the mountains
phālāgninetrāya — to the one whose eye upon the forehead burns with fire
phaṇīśvarāya — to the Lord of serpents
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to the one who is glorified with Brahmā as his charioteer, who wields the great mountain as his bow, and who is the Lord of the mountains. Namaḥ to Śoṇādrinātha, whose third eye upon the forehead burns with fire and who is the Lord of serpents. Namaḥ Śivāya.
गोविन्दबाणाय गुणत्रयाय विश्वस्य नाथाय वृषध्वजाय ।
पुरस्य विध्वंसनदीक्षिताय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥७॥
govindabāṇāya guṇatrayāya viśvasya nāthāya vṛṣadhvajāya |
purasya vidhvaṃsanadīkṣitāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 7 ||
govindabāṇāya — to the one whose arrow is Govinda, Viṣṇu
guṇatrayāya — to the one who embodies the three guṇas: sattva, rajas and tamas
viśvasya nāthāya — to the Lord of the universe
vṛṣadhvajāya — to the one who bears the bull as his emblem
purasya vidhvaṃsanadīkṣitāya — to the one dedicated to the destruction of the cities
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to the one whose arrow is Govinda, Viṣṇu; who embodies the three guṇas of sattva, rajas and tamas; who is the Lord of the universe; and who bears the bull as his emblem. Namaḥ to Śoṇādrinātha, who is dedicated to the destruction of the three cities of Tripura. Namaḥ Śivāya.
जरादिवर्ज्याय जटाधराय अचिन्त्यरूपाय हरिप्रियाय ।
भक्तस्य पापौघविनाशनाय शोणाद्रिनाथाय नमः शिवाय ॥८॥
jarādivarjyāya jaṭādharāya acintyarūpāya haripriyāya |
bhaktasya pāpaughavināśanāya śoṇādrināthāya namaḥ śivāya || 8 ||
jarādivarjyāya — to the one free from old age and decay
jaṭādharāya — to the one who bears matted locks
acintyarūpāya — to the one whose form is beyond comprehension
haripriyāya — to the one dear to Hari, Viṣṇu
bhaktasya pāpaughavināśanāya — to the one who destroys the accumulated sins of the devotee
śoṇādrināthāya — to the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
namaḥ śivāya — Namaḥ to Śiva
Commentary:
Namaḥ to the one who is free from old age and decay, who bears matted locks, whose form is beyond comprehension, and who is dear to Hari, Viṣṇu. Namaḥ to Śoṇādrinātha, who destroys the accumulated sins of his devotees. Namaḥ Śivāya.
Phalaśruti
स्तुतिं शोणाचलेशस्य पठतां सर्वसिद्धिदम् ।
सर्वसम्पत्प्रदं पुंसां सेवन्तां सर्वतो जनाः ॥९॥
stutiṃ śoṇācaleśasya paṭhatāṃ sarvasiddhidam |
sarvasampatpradaṃ puṃsāṃ sevantāṃ sarvato janāḥ || 9 ||

śoṇācaleśasya — of Śoṇācaleśa, the Lord of Śoṇa Hill
paṭhatām — of those who recite
sarvasiddhidam — giver of all accomplishments and perfections
sarvasampatpradam — bestower of all prosperity and wealth
puṃsām — to people
sevantām — may they serve or worship
sarvataḥ — everywhere
janāḥ — people
Commentary:
Those who recite this praise of Śoṇācaleśa, the Lord of Śoṇa Hill, attain all accomplishments and prosperity. May people everywhere worship and serve the Lord and be blessed.
