Durva Grass : The Blueprint of Kundalini as Revealed in Yajur Veda

Durva Suktam is a portion from the Taittiriya Aranyaka of Krishna Yajur Veda.It generally describes the potency of the durva grass which is used in Lord Ganapati worship.

Durva Suktam is found in the Taittiriya Aranyaka - the forest treaties ( secretive part of the Vedas learnt in the forests traditionally ) of the Yajur Veda.Durva Suktam is also incorporated within the first few chapters of the Mahanarayana Upanishad.

Introduction to Vedas

The entire Universe is reverberating. When there is reverberation, there is sound. In other words, the entire cosmos is simply a manifestation of sound energy. The ancient Vedic sages through penance, activated non-mechanical parts of their brains which enabled them to download cosmic data directly. They received cosmic truths in the form of sounds which they heard and experienced. These truths were recited as received, and passed on generations after generations.

Various truths downloaded by various Rishis gave rise to the ocean of Vedas.Veda Vyasa later compiled these Vedas and classified them. These is how the 4 Vedas came to existence. Each of these Vedas had many branches. Each branch had 4 components :

(1) samhita
(2) brahmana
(3) aranyaka
(4) Upanishad

Since the Durva Suktam is part of the Aranyaka of the Taittiriya Shaakha ( branch ) of the Krishna Yajur Veda,we do not know the Rishi who downloaded it. The Aranyaka portion's Rishis are unknown.

Durva ( Bermuda grass ) holds an auspicious position in the Vedic culture. It is linked to medicinal and healing properties. Buddhists revere this grass too. This Sukta is said to be recited by the ancients during their bath.

The verses of Durva Suktam appear to speak about the glories of Durva Devi. In a deeper dimension, it contains the codes that denote the very sound form of Kundalini energy - the potential shakti in one, which leads to enlightenment once aroused and activated through the chakras.

There are some prominent verses in this Sukta which actually talk about the spinal cord.

My mentor reveals

My mentor, Shri Maunish Vyas narrated his experience with Durva Suktam - in which he experienced the truth of this Suktam.

My mentor in his early days explored the Durva Suktam. As he recited a particular verse ( kaaNDaat kaaNDaat prarohanti parusHaH (f) parusHaH (f) pari ).. he saw a hologram. He literally had the vision of the central nervous system in front of him - in midair, as though it was projected through a TV screen.

The graphic details of the brain and the spinal column were physically manifesting in front of him. This denoted the Kundalini shakti which rises through the subtle channels within the spinal column.

Sometime later, he was looking for the meaning of kaatyaayani ( roots ka + ati + ayani ) in the dictionary when he stumbled upon the verse ' kaaNDaat kaaNDaat , given as a reference for the word 'kaatyaayani'.

Kaatyaayani is a name for Shakti. The sound kaaNDaat and kaatyaayani have the same root sound 'kaa'.

The Lalita Trishati from the Brahmanda Purana too, reveres the sound 'ka'. Lalita Trishati is the secret knowledge bestowed to Sage Agastya by Lord Hayagriva. As per this Purana, Lalita Devi is the very form of 'Ka'.One of her names is 'Kakararupa' ( the very form of KA )

The Shodashi of Shri Vidya also reveres the sound 'KA'.

Durva grass is also used to worship Lord Ganapati. As per the Ganapati Upanishad of Atharva Veda, one who recites and studies the Upanishad shall become as prosperous as Kubera if he does Yaaga with durva grass.

Image: The blades of Durva grass resemble the spinal cord. They have segments, as though they possess intervertebral discs.

The Durva grass is the blueprint of the spinal cord and Kundalini. Its very form resembles the spinal cord. This is why the verses of the Durva Suktam, though appear to speak about the grass, actually denote the spinal cord. In fact, this truth was experienced by my mentor as he recited the Suktam ( This again stresses as to why the Vedas are to be learnt through recitation )

Lord Ganapati is the presiding deity of the Muladhara Chakra. This is the root chakra. Kundalini awakening is initiated with the activation of the Muladhara chakra as this is the base chakra which forms the foundation for the entire system.

This is why Durva blades are used to worship Lord Ganesha.

In a nutshell, the verses of Durva Suktam denote the role of the spinal column and Kundalini awakening. The blueprint for this is represented by the Durva grass by the play of nature.

Walnuts are the blueprint of the brain and they enhance intelligence. Likewise, the durva grass is the blueprint for Kundalini Shakti.

Durva Suktam awakens the Kundalini Shakti when recited evidenced by the mystery it holds. It is no wonder that this comes under the secretive Aranyaka portion of the Vedas, which was only learnt under strict discipline and renunciation.
