Surya Upanishad - Awaken Your Solar Power

Surya Upanishad is part of  Atharva Veda. Upanishad refers to a portion of the Vedas which gives the essence of Vedic truths, commonly through the expression of a deity.

This portion of Atharva Veda uses Surya as a reference for absolute consciousness - Braman. It also reveals our very self as Surya (Atma ) and the secret mantra that invokes solar energy.

Contents of Surya Upanishad :

The Sage ( Rishi ) who received Surya Upanishad is Brahma ( Vedas are not authored. They were received by Sages in the form of sounds ). Gayatri Chandah ( The verses of the Vedas were received in specific metres we call Chandas ) governs this Upanishad

The deity of the Upanishad is Aditya ( Surya ).Hamsa Soham ( I am that ! ) with Agni and Narayana is the bija.Hrillekha is the Shakti. The reciter of this Upanishad is said to attain the four goals of human life - dharma, artha, kama and moksha

These details are found at the introduction of Surya Upanishad.

Then, the Upanishad proceeds to describe the golden form of Lord Surya Narayana - who is seated on a chariot with 7 horses, having four arms bearing two lotuses, while the others bestowing promise of refuge and boon, set in the red lotus, and who is the impeller of the time wheel. One who knows this is a Brahmana.

Then comes the Gayatri Mantra. Gayatri mantra's presiding deity is the Sun

Lord Surya is later glorified as the manifestation of the entire creation and the source from which creation came to existence

He is also described as the very source of our senses, motor organs, and bodily functions.

Surya is also said to be verily Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, and the 4 Vedas.

Then, the Upanishad further asserts air, earth, water, light, fire, sky, the directions, the Devas and Vedas as having born from Surya. The Sun also provides warmth to the planet.

The inner organs, mind, intellect, ego, life force ( whose components are apana, samana, vyana and udana) are the forms of Surya.Surya is also verily the five senses and motor organs in living beings. He is the source to these.

Bliss, knowledge and wisdom is the manifestation of Surya. We then bow to Him and request to be protected.

All creatures are born, sustained and re-emerge into Surya. Then comes the revelation the we are Surya Himself ! Surya is Atma.Atma is us ( we are absolute consciousness which is represented by Surya in this Upanishad ).The divine Savita ( Sun ) is regarded as our very eyes.He is parvata as sacred timings are marked by Him.We request Him to protect our eyes.

Then comes the Surya Gayatri - where we meditate on the thousand rayed Sun and request Him to enlighten us.

Then we identify Surya as being present everywhere around us.We request Him to grant us omnipresence and longevity.

The mantra formulae to tap into the Solar power is described as 'Om GhriNihi Surya Adityom ' .One who recites this daily is a Brahmana.

Merits of Chanting Surya Upanishad.

These are taken from the Upanishad itself.

(1) If this Upanishad is chanted while facing the Sun, one is released from the fear of great diseases

(2) His poverty perishes

(3) He becomes free from various sins such as eating forbidden foods, having forbidden sexual relationships, indulging in conversation with people having no character.

(4) At midday, if one recites this facing the Sun, he is released from the great 5 sins.

(5) One should be careful when imparting this knowledge to undeserving people.

(6) He who chants at dawn becomes fortunate, gets livestock and masters Vedas

(7) When recited during three periods namely, dawn,mid-day, and dusk, one gets the fruit of performing a hundred Yagyas.

(8) One conquers death while reciting this when the Sun is in Hasta Nakshatra.

Why recite it? Can't I just go through the meanings?

The beauty of Vedas lies in its sound aspect. Vedas are literally the sound waves that reverberate with the cosmos. They were heard by ancient Sages who then orally transferred this sound-bound knowledge to disciples. This is why they are known as Shrutis ( that which was heard ). This is also why Veda chanting is bound to intonations ( uprise and downfall of pitches). Other forms of prayers that are not from Vedas do not have this rule ( eg.Lalita Sahasranamam ).

If you read, it is nothing different from reading a good philosophy. No experience in you is triggered. If you chant it, the truths of the Vedas are realized by the very reciter.

Reading and knowing is different from reciting and letting the sound of the Vedas erupt the very experience in you.

The mantra ( sound energy ) is the pendrive through which cosmic data is transferred into the chanter.

Sun worship has been a very prominent part of our ancients. Even today, many of you would be carrying the traits of affinity to solar energy. Chanting the Surya Upanishad can stir this inbuilt memory within you to its fullest potential.

Lord Surya's energy played an important role in Mahabaratha. Kunti Devi conceived Karna - a prominent character of this Ithihasa through Lord Surya's energy.

The manifestation of Surya's energy expressed through Karna's mystical and superhuman traits.

In Ramayana, Rama and Lakshamana were initiated into the secrets of sun worship by Sage Vishwamitra. Lord Rama recited a hymn known as 'Aditya Hrdayam' which guaranteed His success in the war.

By chanting the Gayatri,( Remember that Gayatri addresses the Solar energy and is chanted in Surya Upanishad ) Sage Vishwamitra could summon powerful weapons.

Lord Rama belonged to the Solar Dynasty.

Unfortunately, Sun worship has declined evidently today.

Significance of Sun Worship

You function with solar energy itself!

The Sun exists as an objective physical phenomenon. The Moon and the Earth are there. The Earth has come from the Sun.The Moon has come from the Earth. Both the Earth and the Moon have come from the Sun.They are fragments of the Sun. Without the Sun the world cannot exist ; there can be no birth or death.Nothing can exist without the Sun. This was the reason the ancients worshiped the Sun as Divine. Elements of the Sun are present in every human being.Everyone has originated from the rays of the Sun.The light within each one is derived from the Sun.As His light is present within us,we are a fragment of the Sun.Each one of you carries the imprint of the Sun within you.

When the Surya Upanishad refers to the Sun, it is not just the physical Sun. It also refers to the inner Sun- the embodiment of the spiritual light within. The physical Sun we observe every day. But the inner Sun, the Sun of divinity that we have inside us, we may not observe unless we learn to look within. The physical Sun gives us light that nourishes and purifies. The inner Sun gives us illumination and spiritual wisdom that removes the darkness of ignorance.

The intense heat of the physical Sun scorches everything and kills germs. The spiritual wisdom of the inner Sun has the power to burn out evil desires and harmful attachments.

The physical Sun is very far from the planet Earth. When we observe the Sun from here, we see a tiny disc, but we know how bright and vast it really is. Similarly, the inner Sun that we have deep within us, is very far from us and it seems very tiny and insignificant. But when we approach our inner Sun we realize just how infinite it really is. Experiencing this infinity, we are illumined and transformed. - Bhagavan Shri Sathya Sai Baba.

In a nutshell...

Sun worship should be appreciated once again. As a deity, Surya is visible to our naked eyes as a star. Chanting the Surya Upanishad and the Gayatri to this visible form of God will elevate us.

Remember that most of us carry a dense affinity to solar energy as our ancients were ardent worshipers of the Sun. This genetic makeup can hasten our progress in tapping this energy.

May the chant of Suryopanishad fill the atmosphere as dawn peels over the sky to kiss our forehead with His nourishing rays.
